Woman Killed by SUV in Northeast Philadelphia

fatal accident north philly

A woman on a motorized scooter was killed Wednesday after colliding with a Kia SUV. According to the Warminster Township Police Department, the crash occurred around 9:30 p.m. at the intersection of Frankford Avenue and Academy Road in Northeast Philadelphia.

The woman, 48, was traveling north on Frankford Avenue when she crashed into the SUV, which was making a lefthand turn from Academy Road. She was thrown from the scooter and was unresponsive when officers arrived. She was transported to an area hospital, where she later died of her injuries despite life-saving measures. The SUV driver, 20, was uninjured and remained at the scene, police said.

Witnesses told police that the woman was riding with five or six other scooter and dirt bike riders who all fled the scene. No charges have been filed, and the accident remains under investigation. Anyone with information regarding the crash is encouraged to contact local law enforcement.

Accidents between cars and motorized scooters typically result in the scooter rider sustaining serious or fatal injuries. Like motorcycle riders, scooter riders have no protection from a metal frame, airbags, or other safety features in motor vehicles. Scooter and vehicle collisions often occur at intersections, usually due to drivers failing to notice scooter riders.

In Pennsylvania, vehicles are required to yield to motorized scooters in certain situations, the same as motorcycles and bicyclists. State laws regarding motorized scooters are similar to bicycles. Drivers must yield for scooters in crosswalks or at intersections when the scooter has the right of way and allow at least 4 feet of clearance between the vehicle and the scooter when passing. Failure to yield can result in deadly accidents and potential legal consequences.
